【Science & Humanity Forum】 the Spirit of Contract in Western Religions

On the afternoon of June 3rd, Zhao Lixing, a professor at the law school and a doctoral supervisor in Fudan University, was invited to SUFE Science and Humanity Forum to give a special lecture on the Spirit of Contract in Western Religions. The lecture was held at the lecture hall of  the School of Statistics and Management, attracting more than 130 teachers and students to take part.

Starting from three classic contracts — the covenant of the Garden of Eden, the Ten Commandments, and the covenant of Redemption, professor Zhao then talked about the secularization of the concept of contract and the sanctification of secular contract, and then further explained the basics and spirit of contract.

Further, professor Zhao elaborated doctrines, canons and rituals in Western religions, and revealed the spirit of contract that is contained in them and its various manifestations in religious views and systems; by illustrating many vivid events and allusions in Western religions, he demonstrated the penetrative influence of the spirit of contract and its systematic practice in Western secular society, especially the shaping effect to the legal culture, value system and so forth. What’s more, in a perspective of comparative culture, prof. Zhao compared the similarities and differences of the establishment of the spirit, the concept and practice of the contract between Chinese and Western societies, and profoundly revealed the great significance of the spirit of contract to the construction of a rule-of-law state and the advance of a market economy in China.

By means of excellent pictures and fascinating stories, Mr. Zhao gave the audience a wonderful lecture, and helped them become more aware of the far-reaching impact of the spirit of contract and its practice in Western society, and thus won loud applause.
