The first Confucius Class under the Confucius Institute at Queen Mary University of London officially unveiled

On September 16th, the Confucius Class established by the Confucius Institute at Queen Mary University of London and St. Augustine’s Catholic Primary School was officially unveiled. Participating in the ceremony were: Mr. Li Guoqiang, First Secretary of the Education Office of the Chinese Embassy in the UK; Professor Kathryn Richardson, Foreign Dean of the Confucius Institute at Queen Mary University of London; Pius Olorunfe-Ojo, Principal of St. Augustine’s Catholic Primary School; Mrs. Brenda McEwen, Chairperson of the St. Augustine’s Catholic Primary School Board; Sun Bing, Director of the SUFE Office of the Confucius Institute; Lou Zun, Chinese Dean of the Confucius Institute at Queen Mary University of London; as well as teachers and about 200 students in grades 4-6 of St. Augustine’s Catholic Primary School.

St. Augustine’s Catholic Primary School is located in the east of London. It is a medium-scale public elementary school with 460 students of grades 1-6. It is recognized as an excellent elementary school in east London. The elementary school will include Chinese language in the compulsory courses which will cover the whole school. With the support of the Confucius Institute, the elementary school will expand the scale of faculties and encourage students to learn Chinese and understand China.

The Confucius Class at St. Augustine’s Catholic Primary School was officially approved on November 15, 2018 by Confucius Headquarters (Hanban). This is the first Confucius Class established by SUFE. It is of great significance in promoting Chinese culture and enhancing the international influence of both universities. More importantly, it will strengthen the friendship between the Chinese and British people.
