Strengthen Our Faith and Pursue Our Dreams----a Special Lecture entitled “Walking With Art-Approaching Huang Doudou”

At 10 a.m. on the 6th of June, a special lecture, part of the series of activities called “Scholar Reports Into the Campus”, jointly hosted by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, the Shanghai Committee of the Youth League, the Shanghai Youth Federation and the Communist Youth League Committee of SUFE, was held on schedule at the lecture hall of the Administration Building. This time Mr. Huang Doudou , a famous dancer, was invited to share his personal experiences. The lecture aimed to pass positive energy to youth and inspire the creativity of college students, while guiding them to establish a life-long belief and the correct values to pursue the Chinese Dream.

Mr. Huang is a famous dancer and a State first-class artist in China, he is also the first Chinese artist to perform at Vail International Dance Festival. Having been a coach or judge in dancing programs like Step Up, Dancing With the Stars and The Dance of China, Mr. Huang has accepted an exclusive interview for the Times, and was once on the cover of Dance Spirit. Hailed as a “milestone of classical dance”,his representative works include Chinese Kong Fu, Rong, Zhuangzhou Dream and Drum Dance in Prosperous Times.

At the beginning of the lecture, Mr. Huang explained amusingly the question that confused many: why a man is named Doudou (Beans)? It turns out that Mr. Huang’sparents are obsessed with both performing and composing dance. His father was like a rolling bean when doing somersaults, so he was given the nickname of Huang Dou, which is the Chinese way of saying soybean. This was where Mr. Huang’s name came from. The seemingly simple and lovely name actually demonstrated much expectation from his parents-they hoped that their son would become the best dancer and fulfill the dreams of their own youth.

During the lecture, Mr. Huang defined dance as an art of cooporation, spreading friendship and exploring the mother culture. By presenting some exclusive videos, Mr. Huang illustrated stories behind some of his best-known creations and his own experiences in detail. In the Drunken Drum which was performed at the Spring Festival Gala, Mr. Huang danced on a drum which was held together by extras. It was the concentration and collaboration that produced such a spectacular display. While in Spirit of the Terracotta Warriors, Mr. Huang worked together with the foreign extras, which not only demonstrated the communication between the dancers and different types of dances, but also the communication across different cultures. As to the solo dance Oracle Bone Inscriptions, Mr. Huang went to visit museums and calligraphers to deepen his understanding of the mother culture when composing the dance so that he can create such a marvelous work.

From a little boy, who was considered not very talented in dancing, to a shining star on the international stage, Mr. Huang shared his experiences of struggle humorously. With the devotion to  living an extraordinary life, Mr. Huang became a solo dancer through his tireless efforts.

During the interactive session, Mr. Huang answered in detail every question of the students. We believe that students will take Mr. Huang as an example, pushing themselves to new levels of success in all parts of their lives.
