From July 4th to July 22nd, the School of Mathematics Voluntary Teaching Group traveled to the small county of Menglian in southern Yunnan Province, and taught for nearly 20 days at the First Middle School of Menglian County. This marked the third consecutive year SUFE students have made the trek and have spread their love to the community in the small border town near Burma. Upon arriving in Menglian after a four day journey that ended

on the evening of July 8th, the group was welcomed by SUFE students who had already been serving in Menglian for the past year. After convening with their peers and learning about their future students and after a careful preparation of their lessons, the volunteer group was ready to begin their summer courses on July12th.

They provided a variety of courses for the students: “Whimsy” was a course about discovering mathematical principles behind common phenomenons, “Logic,” which helped students learn about logical thinking through interesting games, “Life and Health,” which provide students with knowledge about hygiene and disease prevention, and “Travel the World,” which educated students on the different languages and cultures from around the world.
After such enlightening yet exhausting courses, it was important that the students had fun. Zhang Tianyi organized a number of developmental classes and activities for the students which included a number of games that required teamwork and provided fun and laughter at the same time.

Although their time spent in Menglian was short, their impact will be everlasting. Each SUFE student spread goodness to the children of the remote mountainous area of our motherland, giving them more possibilities for the future, and helping them to understand the rest of the world. They serve as examples for the children as they grow, and for all of us as we grow too.
