The Cooperation Conference Between Inter-American Development Bank and SUFE School of International Business Administration is Held

July 28th— Chief economist and research director of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) José Juan Ruiz Gómez, Julio Angel from the Asian Office, and Mr Xu Jianjun from Office of Outreach and Partnerships, visited the School of International of Business Administration (SIBA). Dean of the SIBA Ju Jiandong, Assistant to the Dean Ju Heng, associate professor Gaoxiang and assistant professor Tang Lixin all attended the meeting.

To start the meeting, Ju Jiandong extended a warm welcome to the delegation. After giving a brief introduction to SUFE, professor Ju described SIBA's international teaching staff, scientific research, and talent cultivation. He also expressed his hope to further promote SIBA’s globalisation by cooperating with international organizations.

Mr. Ruiz commented on how the wonderful academic achievements and the international background of the teaching staff at SIBA impressed him deeply. Later he went on to say that the Inter-American Development Bank was developing into a Knowledge Bank of the American economy, and that it both supports and leads regional development by providing intellectual support.

During the seminar portion of the event, both parties discussed their research on the capital market in China and Latin America. Mr Ruiz carried out his report, Latin America Meets China: IDB Mission to Peking and Shanghai, while Gao Xiang shared his research on Domestic Creditor Rights and External Private Debt. After Tang Lixin spoke about international trade and inequality,  Ju Jiandong discussed with the participants Capital Market Openness and Financial Crisis Prevention in China.


After the meeting, both parties agreed that such meetings are paramount to sustaining long-term cooperation. The People’s Bank of China (the central bank of China) invited IDB to participate in the event with the purpose of exploring views on development issues and the possible areas for joint research with Chinese institutions.


IDB

Established in 1959, IDB is the main source of multilateral financing for economic, social, and institutional development in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), as well as for regional integration. It is the leading source of infrastructure financing and plays a leading role in backing private sector projects that contribute decisively to sustainable growth and social inclusion in LAC. IDB has 48 member countries, including 26 LAC borrowing members, who have a majority ownership of the IDB, as well as 22 non-borrowing member countries. China joined the bank in 2009.


José Juan Ruiz Gómez

Chief Economist and Manager of the Research Department Inter-American Development Bank.

Mr. Ruiz comes to the IDB from the Banco Santander, where he served as Director of Strategy and Chief Economist in the Latin America Division. For the past 12 years he has been a member of the Executive Committee of the America Division and has been a member of the Board of Directors of Banco Santiago in Chile, Banco Santander Colombia, Banco Santander Puerto Rico, Banco Santander Perú, and Banco Venezuela.


Mr. Ruiz has also held various governmental positions in the Ministries of the Economy, Finance, and Commerce. He was Undersecretary of the International Economy and Competition, and Chairman of the Economic Policy Committee of the European Union from 1991 to 1993. He was responsible for Spain’s relations with the OECD, IMF, and the World Bank, where he also served as a consultant. From 1993 to 1996, he was the Chief Economist for Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria.
