IASB Chair Visits SUFE

On the afternoon of October 13, Dr. Andreas Barckow, Chair of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), visited Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE), accompanied by Dr. Lu Jianqiao, former IASB Board Member, representatives from the Accounting Department of the Ministry of Finance, and members of the Accounting Standards Committee. President Liu Yuanchun of SUFE met with the guests, while Vice President Li Zengquan and Dean of the School of Accounting Jin Qinglu participated in related activities.

President Liu extended a warm welcome to Chair Barckow and all distinguished guests on behalf of SUFE. He highlighted SUFE's profound heritage and achievements in accounting education, noting that it has not only cultivated numerous high-caliber finance professionals for the nation but also established distinctive strengths in accounting standards research and theoretical innovation. And he expressed deep gratitude for the IASB's longstanding strong support for the accounting discipline development of SUFE. He stated that SUFE looks forward to establishing closer cooperation with IASB to advance the implementation of the “ Talent Development and Scientific Research Collaboration Base.” Through joint research projects and academic exchanges, both sides will leverage complementary strengths to explore innovative models for cultivating finance and accounting professionals. This initiative aims to produce versatile talents proficient in both Chinese practices and international standards for the global accounting community.

Barckow offered a positive reply, expressed gratitude for the warm reception extended by SUFE, and highly commended SUFE's academic strength and achievements in talent cultivation within the accounting field. Barckow emphasized that the IASB is committed to advancing the high-quality development of global accounting standards. As a leading institution in China's finance and economics education, SUFE offers valuable insights through its experience in both theoretical research and practical exploration. He expressed anticipation for expanding cooperation with SUFE in the future, while welcoming more outstanding SUFE graduates to join the IASB and its committees, contributing Chinese wisdom to global accounting governance.

During his visit, Barckow delivered an insightful lecture titled “Maintaining High-Quality Reporting in a Rapidly Changing Environment.” He provided a detailed overview of the IASB's operational mechanisms, current challenges, and key future priorities. 

During the Q&A session, faculty and students engaged in in-depth discussions with Barckow on topics including fair value measurement, risks associated with AI applications in accounting, and intangible asset measurement, fostering a vibrant atmosphere of exchange. This event not only provided a valuable opportunity for face-to-face interaction with international accounting standard setters but also deepened participants' understanding of the challenges and future development directions of IFRS in practical application.
