New semester, new journey. Students armed with the energy built up during winter break, press the "start button" for the new semester. University leaders Xu Tao, Yao Lingzhen, He Pengcheng, Liu Liya, Liu Qingsheng, Zhou Guoliang, Jin Yuying, along with Party Committee Standing Committee members Cao Dongbo and Chu Hua, also stepped into the teaching buildings to observe classroom instruction, randomly audit classes, and engage in interactions with teachers and students.
Here are reflections from students and professors about the first class:
Ye Zhong, Undergraduate Student, School of Accounting, Class of 2022
The new semester started with the professional course “Advanced Financial Accounting II”, which marked the deepening of the study of accounting to the stage of “complex affiliation processing”, from theoretical problem solving to the analysis of difficult problems. Prof. Chen took the knowledge of “Advanced Financial Accounting Ⅰ” as a brief introduction, introduced the concept of Affiliation Structures, and combined with the textbook examples, explained the complete process of preparation of merger drafts and journal entries in depth. It is corroborated by the situation of the client companies that I came into contact with during the winter vacation auditing internship, which stimulated my desire to explore Advanced Financial Accounting. In the new semester, I am looking forward to a deeper understanding of the financial analysis structure of the company and improving my professional ability, so as to lay a solid foundation for my further study and career.
Fu Haowen, Graduate Student, School of Finance, Class of 2024
The first Civics class of the new semester, “Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era”, brought me a brand-new understanding from a macroscopic point of view. As a student of SUFE, we have the responsibility and obligation to combine our personal professional growth with the development strategy of the country, utilize our professional advantages in finance and economics, and strive to become the central force to promote the progress of the society and the development of the country. New semester, new beginning. I look forward to the future learning journey, can be more in-depth comprehension, the pursuit of personal ideals into the realization of the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. In the future, I will adhere to SUFE motto “To pursue moral and academic excellence in service of the country and society”, keep exploring and innovating, and write my own chapter of youth with practical actions.
Tan Bida, Undergraduate Student, College of Business, Class of 2023
The first class of the semester was a brand new experience for me after the internship across different industries during the winter break. In the first section of Strategic Management course, I was able to pay more attention and integrate my observations in the internship company into the company's strategic considerations, and different market segments and user behaviors unfolded in my mind in a well-organized manner. In the following days, I will be taking Operations and Human Resource Management courses, I hope that this knowledge will become vivid and clear, and I would like to experience with my whole heart and soul the vivid and fascinating aspects of management methods, for example, where employee happiness comes from, and how giant corporations “dance with elephants”. At the same time, I would like to go deeper into practice and witness how more classic theories work in reality, and preferably experience the colorful interplay of different branches of the discipline, which will continue to brighten my eyes.
Yao Junteng, Undergraduate Student, School of Economics, Class of 2022
At the beginning of the new semester, my first class was “Big Data Economics” by Prof. Luo Sai. He introduced the connotation of big data and its application in economics research in an in-depth manner. Through various cases, he showed some interesting researches using big data, which gave me an intuitive understanding of the powerful functions of big data, and stimulated my understanding of this course, not only letting me feel the charm of big data, but also letting me realize its importance in economics. I am looking forward to learning in-depth about the technology related to big data processing, mastering its application methods in the field of economics, and completing the selected topic through group collaboration and practice, so as to establish a solid foundation for my future study and research.
Bu Xiaoyue, Undergraduate Student, School of Public Economics and Administration, Class of 2022
The course content of the first major class at the beginning of the semester was very in-depth. The professor not only emphasized the importance of combining practice and theory, but also encouraged us to take the initiative to think and discuss with our classmates, and reminded us of the need to carry out career planning. In my opinion, the second semester of my junior year is not only an academic sprint, but also a critical period for personal growth. The lecture helped me to think deeply about how to arrange my time wisely in the following period to improve my professional ability, and at the same time actively participate in internships and projects to lay a solid foundation for the upcoming graduation and employment.
Shi Yuci, Undergraduate Student, School of Law, Class of 2024
At the beginning of 2025, my heart is full of longing and hope for the new semester. The campus is still bustling with activity as I step into SUFE again. In this new semester, I want to learn new knowledge, grow my ability and make more friends. In the first criminal law class of the semester, Prof. Huang Jingye profoundly presented the multiple facets of criminal law in a point-by-point manner, which gave me a deeper understanding of criminal law. In addition, Prof. Huang also introduced us to practical skills such as case searching and methods of reading laws, which helped me a lot. I hope that in the new semester I will be able to skillfully use these methods and work harder!
Tang Yifei, Ethnic Pre-College Student, Class of 2024
Today was the first day of the semester, and Mr. Ma led us into the literary worlds of It's That Cricket and The Grapes Are Ripe. Two texts that are very different in style, but both contain deep philosophies. The cricket sings, evoking the deep affection of the family and the country, and the patriotic sentiment is eternal; the grapes are ripe, celebrating the love of labor and the pursuit of a better life. This is just like the inspiration brought to us: growing up requires patience and perseverance! In the new semester, our matriculants will devote ourselves to learning with a more focused attitude, cherish all classes, and look forward to making progress in the nourishment of knowledge and harvesting our own growth and transformation.
Lara Elisa Metternich(Germany), Exchange Student, International Cultural Exchange School
As an exchange student who has only been in China for a few days, I am still getting used to life here, familiarizing with my surroundings and getting to know the city. Today's first class was Intermediate Microeconomics, which made me realize that studying abroad is not only about exploring a new environment, but also a process of in-depth learning and thinking. In the class, the teacher used vivid cases to explain the market mechanism and consumer behavior, which gave me a deeper understanding of economics and made me look forward to my future study and exploration. Although I have just started, I already feel the unique charm of this city and this university. I am confident that in the coming days, I will not only gain in academics, but also accumulate valuable experience in culture, friendship and personal growth.
Luo Sai, Assistant Professor, School of Economics
Course: Big Data Economics
We live in an era of data transformation. The rise of the internet, social media, smartphones, and the electronic availability of large amounts of historical, paper-based data have made much unprecedented data available and accessible, and have allowed economists to use big data to answer many previously unanswerable questions. This course aims to introduce and interpret cutting-edge research to give students an understanding of: what types of big data are economists using? How can big data help us better understand people's economic decisions and how society works? How can big data help in public policy making? What are the limitations of big data? In this class, students will collect and analyze primary data, attempt preliminary research, and lay the groundwork for a future thesis.

Course: Public Administration
Public Administration is my first class of the new semester, and the students' interest in the course content and their commitment to the case discussions make me feel that the campus is once again full of vitality after the winter break. Public Administration is not only a course, but also a delivery of responsibility and mission. I hope that students can not only master theoretical knowledge in this course, but also cultivate public spirit and social responsibility.
