Vice President of World Bank Pam O'Connell Leads Delegation to Visit SUFE

On October 16, Pam O'Connell, Vice President of World Bank, led the delegation to Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE). Xu Tao, Chairperson of University Council of SUFE, attended and met with the guests, Yao Lingzhen, Vice President of SUFE, presided over the meeting.

Xu Tao firstly welcomed the visit of Pam O'Connell and the delegation. He talked about the origin and long history of cooperation between SUFE and international organizations, highly appreciated the results of exchanges between SUFE and World Bank in the field of talent cultivation, and expressed his sincere gratitude to World Bank for the support and assistance in cultivating excellent and complex financial students with the sense of nationalism and international vision.

Yao Lingzhen briefly introduced the exchanges and cooperation between SUFE and World Bank from the aspects of SUFE former administrators, alumni serving in World Bank, overseas internships of students in the past years, and mutual visits of representatives from both sides. She said SUFE is committed to cultivating students with international vision, and hoped to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation with World Bank in the future in terms of talent cultivation and cooperative research, and better utilize the advantages of finance and economics disciplines, so as to contribute the power of SUFE to the development of World Bank.

Pam O'Connell expressed her gratitude for the warm reception of SUFE. She spoke highly of the long history and abundant achievements of SUFE, fully affirmed the effectiveness of past exchanges and cooperation, and said that both sides have a lot of opportunities to cooperate in cultivating talents for the development of the global economy. At the same time, she also mentioned that she was looking forward to having face-to-face exchanges with the students of SUFE and sharing her experience and advice on working in the financial field of international organizations.

Afterwards, the participants discussed the idea and feasibility of cooperation in international organization talent cultivation programs and scientific research. Junxue Chu, Director of World Bank's Trust Fund and Loan Operations Bureau; Georgine Ann-Marie Newman-Alawode, Advisor to the Vice President of World Bank; Patricia De La Fuente Hoyes, Deputy Director of World Bank's Trust Fund, Loan Operations and Client Services Bureau; Angela Li, Senior Financial Assistant of World Bank's Trust Fund, Loan Operations and Client Services Bureau. Peng Xi, Director of Enrollment and Employment Department of SUFE, Zhu Kai, Vice Dean of Graduate School, and Yang Youzhi, Deputy Director of International Office attended the meeting.

After the meeting, Pam O'Connell introduced the basic situation of World Bank, related business and finance-related career development to students with the topic of “The World Bank's Evaluation and Finance Career”. Junxue Chu shared his personal experience about the job search path and experience of World Bank, and encouraged the students to pursue globalization vision and diversified career opportunities, and actively integrate into the family of international organizations.

During the Q&A session, students asked questions enthusiastically and the atmosphere was warm. The representatives had in-depth discussions and exchanges with students around World Bank's project operation mechanism, blockchain, personal career development and other issues. The seminar provided students with the opportunity to have close communication with the representatives of top international financial institutions, to learn about key topics such as global economic governance, sustainable development and poverty reduction, and to provide first-hand information on the working model, policy influence and global challenges of international organizations for students who aspire to enter the field of international finance for employment.
