On September 23, a delegation from the University of Marburg, led by Vice President Evelyn Korn, visited Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE). The delegation included Markus Roth, Dean ofMarburg LawSchool, and Petra Kienle,Headof the International Office, among others. He Pengcheng, Vice Chairperson of the University Council of SUFE, met with the guests. Zhu Xiaozhe, Acting Dean of the Law School, and Ding Dong, Director of the InternationalOffice, attended the talks.
He Pengcheng welcomed the delegation and reviewed the exchanges between the two universities since they signed cooperation agreements in 2018.He said that with AI fundamentally reshaping higher education, SUFE is advancing interdisciplinary integration under itsIntelligent Business and EconomicsStrategy and preparing to establish the Alliance for Intelligent Business and Economics.He added that, building on SUFE's strengths in finance and economics, itslegal education and research have developedadistinctivedisciplinary profilecentering on foreign-related rule of law, financial rule of law, and digital rule of law. He hoped the two sides would extend cooperation from finance and economics tolaw. He also invited Marburg representatives to SUFE's 110th anniversary celebrations in 2027 and welcomedthe University ofMarburg to join the Alliance.
EvelynKorn thanked SUFE for its hospitality andcommended theoutcomes of theIntelligent Business and EconomicsStrategy and SUFE's progress inthe field oflaw. Shenoted thatthe University ofMarburg also conducts interdisciplinary research on AI governance andboastssolid expertise in comparative corporate law, fintech, and digital rule of law. She hoped to build on theuniversity’sexisting inter-university platformto advance cooperation in foreign-related rule of law, global governance, and other areas. She formally invited a SUFE delegation to an international conferenceonhighereducation in achangingera, to be hosted bythe University ofMarburg in April 2027,as well asits 500th anniversary celebrations in July 2027.
Zhu Xiaozhe introduced Law School's disciplinary framework. Citing China-Latin America rule-of-law research and training programs, collaboration with the Shanghai Financial Court, andparticipation inthe compilation of the Civil Code as examples, he outlined the school'sadvance in foreign-related, financial, and digital rule of law. He noted that many of the school's faculty hold German doctoral degrees or have served as visiting scholars in Germany, which has helped the school build stable academic ties with a number of German universities. He hoped the two sides would explore cooperation in faculty exchanges, talent cultivation, and joint research.
The two sides then held in-depth discussionscovering scholar exchanges, joint doctoral training, short-term study programs, summer courses, and joint research on foreign-related rule of law. They also exchanged views on cooperation models based onrespective strengths and needs of each university.
